一八五六年、現在はチェコの東部、当時オーストリア領だったモラヴィアの田舎町フライベルクに生れたジークムント・フロイトは、長くウィーン大学で教鞭をとり、一九三八年にロンドンへ亡命した翌年、八十三年の生涯を閉じた。亡命を除けば、彼の生涯に外的な波瀾はないが、ユダヤ人の血のために苦悩した、その経験は、あの独創的な学説、人生観に、少なからぬ影響を及ぼしている。
