ウィリアム・シェークスピア（William Shakespeare《１５６４−１６１６》）。
エリザベス朝ルネサンス文学を代表する詩人、劇作家である。
１５８５年頃（シェークスピア20歳前後）にロンドンへ進出。初めは役者であったが、後に劇作家として名を馳せる。20年ほどの間に約38作もの戯曲を創作。その多くが傑作として今日でも世界的に支持されている。ジャンルも歴史劇、悲劇、喜劇、ロマンス劇と幅広い。
代表作に「ロミオとジュリエット」、「夏の夜の夢」、「ハムレット」、「オセロ」、「リア王」、「マクベス」などがある。
また、今日の英語はシェークスピアの影響を大きく受けていると言われている。
