知青大返城发生在上山下乡运动的后期，人们都把大返城视为上山下乡运动的组成部分。本书以社会运动学视角，从理论上论证两个运动的迥异性质，并辅以隐类别分析法，从实践上证明两个运动分属不同类别。知青大返城是中共建政以来，中国民众唯一获得成功的、自发的社会运动。
根据笔者进行的问卷调查，本书对知青下乡动员时的心情、安置流向和形式、下乡期间的劳动、收入、心态、婚恋、与农民关系、以及返城时间和方式、最终职业、子女发展、目前生活、对上山下乡运动和经历的评价等诸多问题进行分析研究。涉及面之广，参与人数之多，至今罕见。
本书总结了知青大返城运动的经验教训：（1）政治机会稍纵即逝，需要运动组织者有敏锐的政治嗅觉；（2）运动组织的重要性；（3）运动的成员必须宽容不同意见，避免分裂；（4）运动需要选择有利的战术，绝食并非有效，而罢工和卧轨较为有效。这些经验将为中国未来的社会运动提供借鉴。
