About this ebook

凡練習武術之人,除各種拳法之外,必兼練一兩種功夫以輔其不足。蓋以拳法為臨敵時動作之法則,而功夫則為制敵取勝之根本。若練就功夫而不諳拳法,應敵時雖不免為人所乘,其吃虧尚小;若單知拳法而不習功夫,則動作雖靈敏,要不足以制人,結果必大吃其虧。故有「打拳不練功,到老一場空」之諺。此功夫之不可不練也。

功夫之種類,亦繁複眾多,不遑枚舉,然就大體區分之,則不出乎兩種,即外功與內功是也。

外功則專練剛勁,如打馬鞍石、鐵臂膊等,制人則有餘,而自衛則不足。

內功則專練柔勁,如易筋經、捶練等法,皆行氣入膜,以充實其全體,雖不足以制人,而練至爐火純青之境,非但拳打腳踢,不能損傷其毫髮,即刀劈劍刺,亦不能稍受傷害。依此而論,則內功之優於外功,固不待智者而後知也。
