全書依先秦、兩漢、魏晉南北朝、唐代、宋元、清代六個時期，闡述歷代重要史學名著包括「四史」、「三通」及史評等等，除介紹編著者生平、成書經過、內容體例及史學評價外，並旁及多種相關的典籍，或作為補充，或加以比較，務求能把中國古代史學的概略面貌，有條理地展示出來。論述內容力求繁簡得當，同時盡量參考新近的研究成果。重要項目用表解說明，每章均有注釋，搭配史籍經典精選文段閱讀，書末附參考書目，可以作為進一步閱讀的線索。

About the author

周佳榮，畢業於新亞書院歷史系，先後獲香港中文大學榮譽文學士、日本廣島大學文科碩士、香港大學哲學博士學位。多年來一直從事歷史教育及研究工作，主要研究近代中國思想史、明清小說史、東亞近代及中日關係，現任香港浸會大學歷史系教授。
