本書以中部六省經濟分化為主題，探討了兩種空間維度的經濟活動現象：省級層面的產業空間重構以及市域層面的經濟集聚。研究表明，2006年以來中部六省經濟分化主要源於省際產業空間重構過程中的毗鄰效應。以農副食品加工業和非金屬礦物製品業為主的產業結構是造成河南等省份經濟活動不向城市集聚的主要原因。河南省經濟不向城市集聚是受其產業結構的影響，並非和空間集聚理論背離，反而是對小地理空間範圍內經濟集聚度受產業外部性影響的一個驗證。
