仁者，親也，親切之謂也。亦即人與人相處，要有親切和順之心意。有了親切和順之心意，發於外則有愛人，敬人之行為。愛人者 人恆愛之，敬人者人恆敬之。親親，尊尊，長長，無不相偶之對待。君之於臣，臣之於君，父之於子，子之於父，夫之於婦，婦之於夫，兄之於弟，弟之於兄，朋友 之於我，我之於朋友，推而廣之，之於眾生，無不以親切和順相待。人皆有親切和氣之心，自然生出同情心。故曰：「惻隱之心，仁之端也」此惻隱之心，即仁之發 端。仁者，天性之心德，居五倫之首，生生不息，無處不存，無微不至，流賦宇宙萬物，上賦於天則清，下賦於地則靈，中賦於人則傑。天有惻隱之心，萬物生焉， 地有惻隱之心，萬物育焉，人有惻隱之心，萬物成焉。孟子曰：「今人乍見孺子將入於井，皆有怵惕惻隱之心。非所以內交於孺子之父母也，非所以要譽於鄉黨朋友 也，非惡其聲而然也。」
