本書內容談論兩種大乘佛教的建國信仰：一是貴霜王朝於1世紀後半葉在犍陀羅奠立的佛教建國信仰，二是龍樹在2世紀中期左右於南印度奠立的佛教建國信仰。這兩種大乘佛教政治傳統同時運用文字（經典）和藝術形象來推廣信仰，因此，本書也探討大乘佛教經典及佛教造像，如何與這兩種政治傳統交織發展。

以往學術界對佛教建國信仰鮮有討論，這是古正美教授投入這個領域的原因之一。透過長期而深入的研究，她發現，上述兩種政治傳統之間存在著密切的關聯。她也指出，大乘佛教自在歷史上崛起之時，便具有政治信仰的個性，而這是古代印度發展的佛教不曾見過之特質。大乘佛教因此可說是中亞文化影響的情況下形成的新佛教傳統。

美國威斯康辛大學莫迪生校區南亞系哲學博士。長期研究大乘佛教建國信仰及佛教造像。出版有：《貴霜佛教政治傳統與大乘佛教》、《從天王傳統到佛王傳統：中國中世佛教治國意識形態研究》、《〈張勝溫梵畫卷〉研究：雲南後理國段智興時代的佛教畫像》，及中英文論文多篇。曾任教新加坡大學、臺灣清華大學等學校。
