畫琺瑯技術自清康熙年間由西方傳教士引入清宮，歷經康熙、雍正兩代的發展，至乾隆朝，在燒製彩瓷方面的技術已十分完善。1736年乾隆即位，任命唐英為御窯廠的督陶官，乾隆二年（1737）一聲令下：「窯上若另有舊樣，仍隨新樣燒造。」不夠新潮皇帝可是看不上眼的，唐英聽命行事，極盡所能地實踐年輕皇帝對官窯的想像。誠如《匋雅》所稱：「華縟極矣，精巧之致，幾於鬼斧神工。」
