竊思混沌未開，理無不在，鴻蒙甫辟，數無不周。理常而不變，數變而有常。故理曰定理，數曰定數，此固不必解，而亦無可解者 也。況乎，執中精一，虞帝探理學之源，衍范敘疇箕子詳數學之目，前人之說備矣，將庸何解？然而不解袛待人之悟，何若有解以釋人之疑？故聖教無隱，性道亦示 諸賢。至誠前知，因革可窮百世，是皆以解解之，並未以不解解之也。降及後世，註解愈繁。陸王之書詳於理，而略於數，陳邵之書，詳於數，而略於理，亦皆洞見 本源，不差累黍。然偏而不舉，滋弊益多。故後之學者，別戶分門，自相刺謬。言理者遁於寂滅之鄉，言數者流於讖緯之學，非盡學者之失，解亦未嘗合解，貽之咎 也。識者憂之，甚欲索一編以救正之，而卒乏善本。爰搜北海老人生平所得，力以示人者，彙輯成編，分為四卷，知理之本於學庸也，故以學庸為先。知數之本於大 易也，故三易探原又次之。知理不離數，數不離理，體用同歸，顯微一致也，故一貫探原又次之。凡以釋理性之疑也，故以理性釋疑終焉，是書也，非作於一時，不 無重出疊見之弊。然慮之深，故言之復，見之切，故說之詳。此尤諄諄提命之苦衷，未可於尋常文法律之也。余恐見是書者，不解其所以致此之由，或欲廢是解，而 別求一解也。
