二年の留学中に一度だけ「余」は倫敦塔を見物した。イギリスの歴史の象徴である倫敦塔の建物を、塔橋からテームス川の向こうに見た時は忘我の心地だった。
塔門を入った「余」は中塔、鐘塔を視界に捉えながら進む。そして、逆賊門、血塔、白塔を見て歩き、過去の出来事に想いを馳せながらボーシャン塔へ向かった。
そこへ行く途中の刑場跡で七歳くらいの男の子を連れた、若く美しい女を見かける。「あの鴉は五羽います」という女の言葉を聞いて、「余」は不思議な思いを抱きながらも、悲惨な歴史が刻まれたボーシャン塔へ向かっていくのだが……
