作家の外村繁は、夫婦で癌に罹患しましたが、その癌と向き合う日常生活の中で、苦しみや不安、そして日常の中で見つける小さな喜びや希望、そして夫婦や家族の絆などを繊細な筆致で描いた一連の作品群を発表しています。
「澪標」（一九六〇年七月）、「落日の光景」（一九六〇年八月）、「日を愛（いと）しむ」（一九六一年一月）／阿佐ヶ谷日記（一九六一年一〇月）」の順番で発行されています。
ここでは、この四作品を発行順で収録しました。最初の「澪標」では、外村の性生活に関することが中心に描かれ、最初の妻とく子との出会いと死別、貞子との再婚、そして最後のほうで、夫婦が相次いで癌にかかったことが描かれています。「落日の光景」「日を愛しむ」は、闘病の中での日々の生活、想いが描かれています。
最後の四番目の「阿佐ヶ谷日記」は絶筆となった連載随筆で、本kindle本の三分の一近くを占めていますが、最後の稿の末尾には、「つづく」と記されています（その記載があるのは連載の各稿の中でこれだけです）。連載を「中断」したものの、これが最後になるとの予感も抱きつつ、回復への一縷の希望も感じさせる三文字のように感じられます。
