多音字，就是一个字有两个或两个以上的读音，不同的读音表义不同，用法不同，词性也往往不同。现代汉语多音字在语言实践中经常是影响交际的语言现象，也是现代汉字定音工作的难点。本书系统收录了世界范围内当代汉语中的多音字，对现代汉语多音字进行系统研究，全面考察多音字现象，并创造性地提出“多音字组”的概念，提出现代汉语多音字规范的原则和方法。
1．同一单字对应的多个多音字(包括声调不同)，视为一个多音字组。如“行⊙háng◎、行⊙hàng◎、行⊙héng◎、行⊙xíng◎”属于一个多音字组。一个多音字组内的多音字之间不空行；不同的多音字组之间空行。
2．多音字组排入每一个相关的无调音节内，如“行⊙háng◎、行⊙hàng◎、行⊙héng◎、行⊙xíng◎”分别排入⊙hang◎、⊙heng◎、⊙xing◎三个无调音节内。再如“钻⊙zuān◎、钻⊙zuān◎”只属于⊙zuan◎一个无调音节，该多音字组只出现一次。
3．多音字组排入某个相关的无调音节内时，该无调音节对应的字音排在最前面。如在⊙dan◎无调音节内，弹⊙dàn◎在弹⊙tán◎前；在⊙tan◎无调音节内，弹⊙tán◎在弹⊙dàn◎前。
4．本书按华语拼音排序。
