修訂後的四級考試大綱對四級考試各部分測試內容、題型和所占分值比例進行了概述。四級試卷構成為：(1）聽力占（總分的35％）；(2）閱讀理解，包括仔細閱讀和快速閱讀（占總分的35％）；(3）完型填空（占總分的10％）；(4）寫作和翻譯（占總分的20％）。各單項報導分的滿分分別為：聽力249分，閱讀249分，完型70分，寫作和翻譯142分。各單項分相加之和等於總分710。
根據《大學英語四級考試大綱》修訂本的要求，改革後的四級考試加大了閱讀的難度，並增加了快速閱讀，考生普遍反映對此不適應。有鑑於此，本書依據改革後的四級題型，以及2006年和2007年的真題編寫了八套全真模擬閱讀試題。每套試題包括：(1）快速閱讀（skimming and Scanning）；(2）仔細閱讀（Reading in Depth）。在給出答案的同時對試題進行了詳細解析。
為使讀者進一步熟悉改革後的四級題型，書後給出2006年12月、2007年6月和2007年12月的大學英語四級真題共三套，並附有答案及聽力原文。
本書難度循序漸進，既可作為課堂教學輔助教材使用，也適合學生自主學習。
