大正12年岩手県生まれ。昭和24年東京文理科大学心理学科卒。同大学研究科修了後、同30年聖心女子大学文学部助教授を経て、同38年教授就任。社会心理学専攻、文学博士。日本社会心理学会会長をつとめ、後進の育成にあたるいっぽう、災害対策、マスコミ関係などでも幅広く活躍。著書は「社会心理学の基底」「現代社会心理学」など多数。
