危素（1303-1372），字太樸，一字雲林。年四十入仕，嘗受薦為經筵檢討，參與編修宋、遼、金三史，元末棄官避居房山，後元順帝北逃、淮王帖木兒不花監國，再度復官。至正二十八年（1368），徐達率軍攻入大都，翰林學士承旨危素本欲投井殉國，卻在最後一刻被勸阻──「國史非公莫知，公死是死國之史也！」明朝建國後，危素應召到達南京，明太祖授侍講學士知制誥。清人劉聲木批評其人「自貶身價」，陳寅恪則慨嘆「國可亡，而史不可滅。」
本書梳理危素著作流傳及其仕宦歷程，並以此為基礎，從「存史」與「失節」脈絡分別探研。首先透過明清官方及士人對於危素易代生死抉擇的評論，分析相關敘述焦點轉變趨勢。其次圍繞危素謫守余闕廟的故事，試圖追索其流傳歷程，探討明嘉靖到清乾隆間，相關敘述的脈絡變化，析論乾隆朝廷為何、如何運用之，進而了解「失節」評價如何被形塑，呈現元明易代人物歷史書寫的形成，並詳細考察其流移與轉變。
