「語源」とは、ことばの由来のこと。そのことばがどのようにして生まれたのかを示すものです。例えば「みやげ〈土産〉」ということばは、「見上げ」がもとになっていて、「品物をよく見て選び、人に差し上げる」という意味から来ています。漢字で「土産」と書くのは、土地の産物を意味する「土産（とさん、どさん）」ということばがあり、自分の土地の産物をみやげに持っていったことに由来します。「置いてきぼり」ということばは、釣った魚を持って帰ろうとすると「置いてけ、置いてけ」という声が聞こえてきたという江戸時代にあった堀“置いてけ堀”から来ています。いんげん豆、内弁慶、サンドイッチ、カーディガン、たくあん。これらのことばはすべて人の名前からできました。本書では、こうした身近なことばの語源を、楽しいイラストをまじえてわかりやすく紹介しています。ことばの由来がわかれば、使い方もわかります。日本語がもっとおもしろくなります。 【PHP研究所】
