幕末に旧家青山家の17代当主として生まれた青山半蔵は向学心が強く、本居宣長、平田篤胤らの国学や漢学を学んでいた。
特に、王政復古に陶酔する半蔵は、木曾の生命線である山林を古代のように人々が自由に使うことができれば生活はもっと楽になるに違いないと考え森林の使用を制限する尾張藩を批判していた。
半蔵は、年老いた父の後を継いで中仙道木曾馬籠宿の本陣・問屋・庄屋を兼ねていたため、実際の運動に参加することはできなかったが、下層の人々への同情や憐みの念は強く、それだけに新しい時代の到来を強く待ち望んでいた——。
ロマン主義詩人として『若菜集』などを発表し、さらに小説『破戒』『春』などの代表的な自然主義作家として知られている島崎藤村。本書は、日本自然主義文学の到達点の一つとも言われる、島崎藤村の実父をモデルとした歴史小説の大作である。
