作者鑒於民主政治在臺灣地區己進入發展階段，在大陸地區尚方興未艾，特編撰此書探索近代中國民主政治的源流，以及在發展過程中的諸多問題。

始於晚清追求君主立憲，中經民初實行民主共和、國民黨在大陸執政時期之由訓政到憲政，迄於近五十年來臺海兩岸的民主現況。

一般說來，革命政黨易走專制的路，民主小黨派易為當權者壓制或收買利用，使百年來的民主政治發展屢受挫折。

值此二十一世紀即將來臨之際，關心臺海兩岸民主前途的人士，不可不讀。

About the author

張玉法

1935年2月生，山東嶧縣人。1959年畢業於臺灣師範大學史地系，1964年畢業於政治大學新聞研究所，1970年畢業於美國哥倫比亞大學歷史研究所。1975年任中央研究院近代史研究所研究員，1985-1991年兼所長，1992年當選中央研究員院士。
