本書は、昭和63年3月に発刊されたエッセイ『素顔の安岡正篤』の新版である。発刊にあたり、構成等大幅な見直しをはかり、加筆修正を施した。「こども論語塾」講師として現在活躍中の著者だが、多くの子どもたちと「論語」を通じて触れ合い、心を通わせるなかで、心の奥底にある祖父の存在感は、日増しに大きくなっているようだ。祖父なら、いまどう答えただろう、どう指導しただろう、と考えるのは、当然といえば当然であろう。エッセイの題材となる、祖父・安岡正篤は、昭和の歴代首相の指南役とまで云われ、政財界の多くのリーダーたちの思想・哲学形成に多大な影響を及ぼした大碩学である。いまも多くのファンがいる。しかし、孫娘との日常生活は予想以上に「普通」であり、その文章からは明治時代以来の古き良き日本の姿・風景が見え隠れする。孫娘として接してきた著者にしか書けない本書の存在は、現在の安岡ファンにとっても、貴重な存在となるはずだ。 【PHP研究所】
