新選組の幹部であった永倉新八の手記が、このたび発見された。これは研究家の間ではその存在が知られ、「幻の手記」と言われていた超一級の史料である。本書は「浪士文久報国記事」と題された手記の原文を全文掲載し、幕末史研究家として著名な木村幸比古氏が意訳、解説を付したものである。永倉は晩年になって、後に『新選組顛末記』として出版される談話を発表しているが、本手記はそれより30数年も前の明治9年頃に、みずから記したものであり、当時の模様が生々しく綴られている。例えば有名な池田屋騒動では、「壱人切テカケル者是アリ、沖田総司是ヲ切ル」「又壱人表口ヘ逃ル者永倉追カケ、是ハ袈裟ガケニ一刀デヲサマル」など表現がリアルである。また芹沢鴨暗殺後「神葬祭立派ニシテ」と神式で葬儀を行なったことなど、新事実も多く明かされている。隊の中枢にあった人物の手記だけに、新選組史・維新史の研究に一石を投じる貴重な史料である。 【PHP研究所】
