政治整合是政治個體結合為政治共同體的過程。就層級上而言，這個經過整合而來的結合體可以是地方、都會或省級、國家、及區域或全球性；至於整合的進行，可以在共同體之間，也可以是在共同體自己的內部。 政治學所探討的政治整合，是指如何處理、或化解國家內部的社會分歧；而國際關係領域所關心的政治整合，是國家在從事協調、調和、及合作之外，如何進一步結合成為某種聯合體。具體而言，政治整合是如何提高凝聚力起碼讓彼此可以不用武力化解衝突、或是進一步透過集體行動來達成互利，甚至於設置治理單位來訂定政策、及採取共同的行動。 影響政治整合的變數大致可歸納為個體鄰近及相似度、共同敵人、溝通、外部鼓勵、權力關係、及菁英的動機。本書以數個國家及國際聯盟為例，探討政治整合的背景、未來及模式類型。
