《南海观音菩萨出身修行传》，又名《观音传》。分两大部分，前半部分叙观音坚心修道，矢志不渝；后半部分写观音与善财、龙女收伏青狮白象的故事。唐以前的观音大都是有胡子的大男人。明清以后，观音在中国人的心目中逐渐成了一位“娘娘”，其中奥妙，与这部小说的流行大有关系。

押赴法场绞，虎背密山藏。灵魂归地府，十殿放毫光。
究囚蒙解脱，香山得返阳。九载修行满，功成道德强。
父疚合乎眼，医疾得如常。文武入山谢，方知骨肉伤。
一家登佛国，快乐在西方。
