本書是根據《紅樓夢》程乙本刪減而成的《紅樓夢》節錄本，旨在期望刪減部分情節及調整段落後，讓讀者更容易進入《紅樓夢》的世界，進而挑起閱讀《紅樓夢》原書的興致。或至少讓沒有時間閱讀《紅樓夢》原書的讀者，能以少於一半以上的時間，領略《紅樓夢》的內涵。
《紅樓夢擷》所刪去的章節，與留下的章節，一樣精彩。值得讀者有空時，重觀原書120 回，將更能體會《紅樓夢》此經典的精妙博深。
為忠於原著，我們特別以『……』的符號，標示出刪節的地方，務使讀者不致誤認此銜接處，為原書樣貌。
本書採用的《紅樓夢》程乙本中，第一回『看官！你道此書從何而起？』前面尚有三百多字。根據紅樓夢較初版本《脂硯齋重評石頭記》甲戌本，此部分為小說凡例。既為凡例，便非原書情節，所以我們並未在『看官！你道此書從何而起？』這段文字前，加上『……』的符號標記，在此特作說明。
本書因為經過刪節，章回已跟原書不同，故另擬七言偶句作為回目。
據學者研究考證，《紅樓夢》原書後四十回為高鶚所續，即本書二十九回一半「才子悲手足別離」之後，是高鶚的手筆。
