對於漢語慣用語的界定以及它與相近熟語形式的區分，歷來存在不少爭論。本書分析了各家的優劣利弊，論述了慣用語的構造和使用特點；比較了與相近熟語形式的異同，提出了合情合理、易於判明、易於使用的界定標準。作為首次有系統的研究，筆者從8,000多條香港粵語熟語中，篩選近3,000條慣用語，進而分析其來源、構造、特點、功能、語用，並比較與廣州粵語或共同語的異同，指出使用時要注意的問題。
