本書借助法國哲學家加斯東・巴什拉（Gaston Bachelard，1884～1962）的元素詩學，從火、水、空氣、土四大物質的想象切入，分析隱藏在陳黎、楊澤作品中的元素意涵，觀察同一世代的兩位詩人於解嚴前的所思所感，並同時探問「我是誰？」、「我看見了什麼？」、「我面對何種困境？」等題目，進一步開展出「夢想」、「存在」、「抵抗」三大論述面向。
雖然本研究擇取解嚴前的詩作，但無意關注詩歌見證了時代的什麼，而是著重在身處於該時代的詩人如何夢想，並反映在作品當中。作者透過四大元素代表的意義象徵，剖析兩人作品的核心內涵，企圖撕下陳黎詩作多關懷現實、楊澤詩風多走抒情浪漫的標籤，祈望從夢想中照見折射出的新觀點，那是世代交替間不斷更新的意志──詩人將不再受限於審美傳統，而是追求適合該世代或自身獨特的語言質地，在夢想中捍衛自由。
