虽然演讲中长篇大论、妙语连珠者也能受到听众欢迎。但大众化的演讲，终究以短居多，以短为贵。精练的演讲其实只有四点：概括浓缩扼要精彩，即用概括的语言把演讲的内容浓缩，从而达到精炼的目的；巧妙对比突出特征，“有比较才有鉴别”，对比手法的运用，可以突出事物的特征，起到以少胜多的效果；语言简洁精益求精，即以极少的语言表达出详实的内容。要做到语言简洁，必须对于自己要讲的思想内容经过认真领会思考，弄清道理，抓住要点，明确中心。总之，精练的演讲就是精益求精，就是剔除一切假话、大话、空话。
