About this ebook
晚清，大約指1840到1911的72年之間，而晚清小說的蓬勃發展期，卻在1902到1911，十年之間而已。 晚清是個內憂外患頻仍的時代，也是個無論在外交、政治、經濟、社會、文化、文學各方面新舊轉型的時代。在如此歷史大動向之下，有心之士起而主張小說應超越傳統的「消遣」性質，積極成為啟發民智、改革社會國家的工具，梁啟超先生首開風氣，辦〔新小說〕雜誌、撰「論小說與群治之關係」、寫「新中國未來記」。此後，小說雜誌興起，創作翻譯輩出，主題既深且廣地反映了當時的社會現象。
三十多年來，有關晚清小說之研究，並未曾中斷，尤其是近年來在國內、外漸漸蔚為風氣，資料搜集與專著散論等多方面的表現，使晚清小說得以重臨大眾面前。基本上，晚清小說是前五四的本土文學運動之一環，但自五四以來，一直成為文學斷層部分，不受重視。我們認為唯有正視它，並加以研究，才能清楚中國現代小說的真相，才能彌補中國文學史上的那一頁空白。
