本書《神明社會論》，主要在說明如何從社會的角度來觀看神明，過去筆者在祭祀圈與信仰圈的研究中，比較強調臺灣民間信仰的組織與活動和庄社、聚落、宗族、姓氏、祖籍、族群和區域人群的關係，有把兩者並置並加以連結的目的，來說明神佛作為集體之福祉與集體靈性的象徵，對於社群與個體福祉與靈性的追求，所起到的作用。本書大致以聚落與姓氏、族群、性別分篇。除了一些學術論點的提出之外，確實也是有著筆者對神明靈性的理解，神明既有著其代表集體的象徵作用，也有著其超越的卓然於世的屬性，方能成為人們所崇敬信仰的對象。

現任慈濟大學宗教與文化研究所教授、中央研究院民族學研究所兼任研究員。
