本書包含三個部分，第一部分是介紹此一方興未艾的文學批評的活傳統；第二部分則集中在凸顯梁啟超和王國維在近代中國文學批評形成之際，對於傳統批評的承先啟後之努力所達致的成就，以及因而形成的典型的對立；第三部分為附錄。在這些短論與演講中，作者始終關切文學與時代，與現實的若即若離的關係，這個問題顯然正觸及「言志」傳統與「神韻」傳統的對立。
