前蘇聯解體後，中亞的5個加盟共和國紛紛獨立，其面對了國內民族主義上升和國內體制轉型的問題。隨著美國和蘇聯的介入，地緣安全格局的變化與全球民主化運動的雙重動力也加諸在中亞國家上，使本區在政治、經濟、文化等層面皆出現值得探討的變化。中亞各國富含發展經濟所需的物質資源，使區外大國對中亞國家更為重視，也因此形成了一系列的軍事安全與經濟組織，而不同經濟組織間的競爭關係，則使中亞的區域安全上升為全球大國權力互動的一部分。中亞各國在依循自身傳統制度慣性的同時，對於國際政治環境的變化亦有所因應，雖掌握了許多新契機，但也產生了很多無法扭轉的結構性限制。
