辛酉季夏，余與周君納涼於荷亭之畔。握手論心，盱衡今古，因及福善禍淫之理，周君喟然長籲而作曰：「色欲之惑人，甚矣哉！ 賢智猶或不免，況其他乎？」余低回良久，竊思勸人於一時，不如勸人於千古。爰以編輯是書為請。周君曰：「余刊《萬善先資集》，垂二年矣，竣工尚有待也，敢 及其他。」余曰：「苟有利於天下，吾無惜乎錙銖。」周君喜，遂發心編輯。既而日復一日，倏至今秋七月庚午，余復舉前言，周君即於是日焚香盥手，握筆構思， 每發一論，必欲洞見原本，豁人心目，而又廣搜三教典籍，以備參考。寢不安席，食不甘味。書成之日，蓂莢三更，乃募工於鐵筆者，繡之梨棗，用廣流傳。惟願見 者聞者，作清夜之鐘，饑鄉之穀，日置案頭，以供賞玩，則慧性既開，福緣自固。至於此集之探源發奧，光怪陸離，當世自有巨眼，余又何容贊一詞哉！
