本書以比較的視角觀察分析了漢語各方言和各詞類中的重疊現象，發現重疊在方言中不僅是一種重要的構形手段，也是一種重要的構詞方式。其中「構詞」作用體現為形容詞、動詞、量詞重疊后的「名詞化」（以官話為代表），名詞、動詞重疊后的「形容詞化」（以閩語為代表）。構形的主要作用則是表示一定的客觀「量」，但也有部分重疊形態的語義焦點是表示說者對量的主觀評價或對事物的主觀感情，具有強烈的主觀性。
