沉香自古就是全世界公認的珍貴稀有物資，在一千年前宋朝丁謂先生所著的《天香傳》中就清楚記載當時的阿拉伯人就已經在經營東南亞沉香的貿易，現今沉香更被列入瀕臨絕種野生動植物國際貿易公約附錄二中管制交易，因此沉香不只是中國人所使用的珍貴物資，更是全世界公認的珍貴稀有物資，因此我們在研究與收藏沉香的同時，也要了解國際市場對於沉香的認定標準。
本書把國際上相關的沉香屬與擬沉香樹種的分布研究報告為讀者簡述，並且依據相關調查與研究文獻推測可能的沉香物件來對照所屬的樹種，這也是目前國內相關沉香書籍沒有提到過的。
現今沉香市場的混亂不清，特別是針對「奇楠沉香」的定義不明更造成收藏者對於沉香收藏信心不足的主因。筆者有鑑於此，提筆寫下個人對於「奇楠沉香」的定義與實驗供大家參考，希望對於往後沉香的研究與發展有些許貢獻。?
