 洪棄生著《瀛海偕亡記》，記錄了1895年（乙未年）清廷割讓臺灣之後，臺灣人英勇抵抗日本接收臺灣的史事，全書分為上下兩卷，上卷記載臺灣民主國成立，劉永福、姜紹祖、徐驤、吳湯興、吳彭年等人率領官兵及義民軍抗日，至劉永福黯然內渡，臺南城淪陷為止。下卷記載日本統治初期臺灣各地人民的武裝抗日行動，包括柯鐵虎、簡大獅、陳秋菊、林少貓、陳發等人的事蹟。由於洪棄生曾參與乙未保臺戰爭，本書內容來自其親身經歷及事後追記，成為研究日治初期臺灣抗日史的重要史料之一。
