根據希伯來聖經的編排1，約書亞記、士師記、撒母耳記和列王紀這些歷史書，為什麼會放在「先知書」2 部分呢？這種編排的主要目的，是要讀者看見以色列民在歷史中的敗壞和沒落，並能以史為鑒。這四卷書一方面好像一面鏡子，把讀者的景況反照出來；另一方面讓讀者認識歷史的教訓，期望他們不會重蹈覆轍。因此，這四卷書也發揮著「先知」的功能。
四卷「前先知書」的位置，緊接在「妥拉」（即摩西五經）之後。申命記以摩西離世，以色列人預備進入迦南作為結束（參申卅四1-8），而約書亞記則以約書亞承繼離世的摩西做以色列領袖作為開始。「前先知書」延續「妥拉」所記載的歷史，記述以色列人如何攻取迦南，如何在迦南建立王國，如何敗壞、離棄耶和華、王國如何分裂，以致以色列及猶大相繼滅亡，猶大人被擄到巴比倫為止。
