根据希伯来圣经的编排1，约书亚记、士师记、撒母耳记和列王纪这些历史书，为什麽会放在「先知书」2 部分呢？这种编排的主要目的，是要读者看见以色列民在历史中的败坏和没落，并能以史为鉴。这四卷书一方面好像一面镜子，把读者的景况反照出来；另一方面让读者认识历史的教训，期望他们不会重蹈复辙。因此，这四卷书也发挥着「先知」的功能。
四卷「前先知书」的位置，紧接在「妥拉」（即摩西五经）之后。申命记以摩西离世，以色列人预备进入迦南作为结束（参申卅四1-8），而约书亚记则以约书亚承继离世的摩西做以色列领袖作为开始。「前先知书」延续「妥拉」所记载的历史，记述以色列人如何攻取迦南，如何在迦南建立王国，如何败坏、离弃耶和华、王国如何分裂，以致以色列及犹大相继灭亡，犹大人被掳到巴比伦为止。
