在中國政治發展的歷史中，「朋黨之爭」可謂歷代有之。其黨禍的慘烈情況，歷代雖有不同，然而，隨之而起的「文禍」與「學禁」，則以宋代最為劇烈。
追溯其原因，乃因宋代朋黨成員，主要是以文人士大夫為主，而他們同時也是宋代政治、文學及學術上的主體。這樣複合型的主體結構，使得宋代的黨爭在黨同伐異的過程中，形成了一個鮮明特點，即興發了「文禍」與「學禁」問題。本文以「烏臺詩案」、「車蓋亭詩案」、「蘇軾策題之謗」、「元祐黨禍與元祐學禁」為例，探討新、舊兩黨在更迭執政時期，所刻意釀製的「文字之禍」與「學術禁錮」，嘗試說明士人的學術文字，在宋代政治黨爭中，如何被當作排除異己的工具。
