本书是对清代说唱文学“子弟书”的专门性研究，在全面搜访、查阅公私所藏子弟书文本的基础上，考察和著录了国内外各重要藏馆和藏家收藏的子弟书文本，梳理和总结了以往的子弟书研究成果，发掘和利用了一批首次披露的子弟书文献资料。本书对现今所知的所有子弟书文本做了编目、版本考订、辑佚等工作；从内部而言，考证了子弟书的起源、名称、作者、题材、演出、流传等重要问题；从外部而言，将其置于清代文学的整体环境之中，考察了它与清代文学政策、旗人社会生活、旗人文士阶层的出现与创作、旗人文学作品的整体状况等问题的关联。
