「水無礙而瀉千里，遇轉折而成萬姿」原為葉維廉先生詮釋蘇東坡：「吾文如萬斛泉源，不擇地皆可出。在平地滔滔汩汩，雖一日千里無難。及其與山石曲折，隨物賦形而不可知也。所可知者，常行於所當行，常止於不可不止，如是而已矣。」之語。林文月於其生命轉折的詮釋，乃至於「三種文筆」的無心插柳柳成蔭，皆非自我刻意安排的追求，而是近於水流之遇山石曲折「隨物賦形」的結果，故其生命風姿或遠於「水無礙而瀉千里」的雄健奔騰，而實特有「遇轉折而成萬姿」的順應曲折、自由豐盈之美。
