1942至45年間上海淪陷期間的電影，因為戰後被指為「附逆」、「落水」，這段歷史有說是「中國電影史上的黑洞」。其時由日本影人川喜多長政和中國影人張善琨領導「中日合作」的中華聯合製片公司，整合留在上海的電影公司和中國影人，三年間拍出了約140部電影。這些電影主要是娛樂大眾的作品。台前幕前人物有周璇、李麗華、白光、王丹鳳、朱石麟、岳楓等。
本書整合中、日資料，探討當年的電影內容、風格和影響。其中包括：川喜多長政為何要把明顯有抗日訊息的《木蘭從軍》發行到淪陷區和日本？張善琨是否國府的「無間道」?「中聯」如何保存中國電影的元氣，同時讓日軍宣揚「中日親善」的目標落空？並介紹朱石麟、岳楓等電影大師當時的創作情形。
