近年，在關於現代性的研究中，歐洲經驗已不再是金科玉律，不同區域於何時又是以何種方式進入現代，實有探討的價值與必要。本書站在多元現代性與後殖民理論的反省基礎上，結合實際歷史研究的進展，倡議以交互比較與相互連結的歷史兩種研究取徑，重探現代性的發展，並企圖從台灣出發，追求超越東方╱西方、殖民╱被殖民僵固二分的知識生產模式。
本書透過探討自律市場、文化與文明概念的演變、專業與公民身分的關係、清帝國的早期現代統治理性、台灣民間神明信仰的現代性、中小企業的彈性生產網絡、中國的天朝主義⋯⋯等政治、經濟與文化三大面向，重新定位台灣的現代性經驗，並與西方的發展進行交互比較。
採取交互比較的方法，可避免以本質化的方式把現代性理解為某些特徵；引進相互連結的歷史考察，則可彰顯現代性本身所內含的異質性，皆有助於開展出超越既有多元現代性的另一種研究路數。
