2003年由聯合報系文化基金會規劃，編輯委員會歷時六年精心整理編校完成了《牟宗三先生全集》，其篇幅龐大、並匯聚了當代著名學者共同編纂，詳實地呈現牟宗三先生的學思歷程。
本書編者李明輝教授亦為當年《全集》編輯委員的一員，負責編輯牟先生的早期文獻。在《全集》問世後，學界陸續發現數十篇牟宗三先生早期的著作。例如，彭國翔教授在哈佛大學發現了牟先生所撰兩萬多字的小冊子《共產國際與中共批判》，推測為當年招商局訓練員工時所使用的政治教育教材。本書不只收錄此文，也收錄了彭國翔教授為此一新材料所撰寫之解說。此外，隨著網路的發達，海峽兩岸的學術研究者蒐集到更多未收入《全集》的文章。李明輝教授結合兩岸學界之力，仔細考定其真偽，並收入董志威先生所做之考辨。這些新文獻再度反映了牟先生一生的現實關懷，有助於後代研究者更加認識牟先生的思想，並從不同的角度去探究牟先生的思想內涵。
