本書藉由史上遺跡與藝術作品闡述文明發展的脈絡以及「真、善、美」的義理。書中論述起於史前時代，終於二十世紀，涵蓋上古、古典、中古與現代四大歷程，它顯示人類文明在超越求生圖存的層次(上古)之後，發覺永恆與絕對的文化價值體系(古典)，然後陷入退縮、懷疑、否定的「見山不是山」階段(中古)，再重新確認與發揚文明的終極意義(現代)。這個發展歷程在民間或世俗社會裡並不具體呈現，但在上層文化的傳承中則清晰可辨，這表示大眾文化的性質永遠是「上古的」，而精英文化的素質則追求「古典」與「現代」的至善精神。至善乃為「真」，它超越「善」與「美」的層次，故最佳的藝術品為超越美感境界，而具有善與真的意涵者。如此可知，文藝復興時期的藝術是史上藝術水準最高的表現，因其不僅具備精良的美術創作技巧，而且富有「究天人之際」的意境。至於「現代藝術」則是資質不足者面對當代價值混淆與社會發展危機時的迷情窘態。
