王世貞（1526—1590），字元美，號鳳洲，太倉(今屬江蘇)人。明嘉靖二十六年（1547）進士，授刑部主事，累官至南京刑部尚書。王世貞是明代“後七子”文學復古運動的實際領袖之一，曾與李攀龍齊名，在李攀龍之後又獨主文壇多年，錢謙益稱其“操文章之柄，登壇設蟬，近古未有”。
王世貞著作繁富，有《弁州山人四部稿》、《弁州山人續稿》、《讀書後》和《弁山堂別集》等。《藝苑卮言》就是《四部稿》中一部重要的詩文理論專著，也是最能集中反映王世貞文學理論思想的一部著作。它不但被當時之人奉為金科玉條，而且影響著後來近百年的文壇。（博客來）
