Wang Shiwei is known to most as the first victim of Chinese Communist Party’s literary persecution, who was killed “by mistake” in 1947 while CCP troops were retreating from Yenan. Mao Zedong is reputed to have been enraged by his death. Wang Shiwei was incriminated by an essay he wrote titled “Wild Lily” which criticized the inequality in Communist Yenan. The issues he discussed foretold the reality that China faces today.

In 2008, S. Louisa Wei began tracing Wang Shiwei’s family members, former students and colleagues, as well as those who stayed in Yenan between 1937 and 1947, including an American CCP member Sidney Rittenberg. Wei also interviewed nearly everyone who has conducted substantial research on Wang Shiwei—including famous journalist Dai Qing, historian Gao Hua, CCP specialist Song Jinshou and Trotskyist expert Gregor Benton. Applying the methods of a documentary filmmaker, this book incorporates four types of material to bridge the gap between traditional history and tracing the life of an individual: oral history from those who lived through this period, citations from works by and about Wang Shiwei, scholarly research, and the author’s own reflections on Wang Shiwei’s life.

With over 160 images from magazines, newspapers, and photographs selected from personal collections and film archives, the book (in traditional Chinese characters) combines solid research with a multifaceted account of history from a variety of perspectives. This book is the first volume of a trilogy titled “Three Lives, Three Destinies: A Trilogy of Chinese Intellectuals from Peking University”.

The second and third volumes will focus respectively on Wang Shiwei’s Peking University classmates Hu Feng (disciple of Lu Xun and target of CCP’s largest literary persecution in the 1955 nationwide Anti-Hu Feng Campaign) and Wang Fanxi (leader of a minority party under the umbrella of Chinese Trotskyism).
