混亂的1900年過去了，中國人回想起那些「舉事」的義和團的農民們時情緒萬般複雜。毫無疑問，義和團的農民們以他們面對列強的反抗起到了阻止帝國主義直接瓜分中國的作用。貧苦農民們的自發起義是中國傳統社會中反覆發生的農民革命的繼續。但是，另外一點也是顯而易見的，那就是義和團運動是反對帝國主義情緒的一次大規模「非理性」的爆發，農民們的反抗憑的僅僅是心中的萬丈怒火和嚴重沾染封建毒素的「法術」。於是，在客觀上，1900年中華帝國爆發的義和團運動所導致的後果是驚人的。雖然中華帝國因俄國人在帝國東北的野心所引發的國際糾紛而暫時避免了被瓜分，但在北京的外國使館從此成為了一個凌駕於帝國政府之上的特殊的權利團體，大清帝國政府因而成為帝國主義們控制中國的工具。更重要的是，更多的中國人看見了中華帝國即將崩潰的跡象，並在這種跡象之中再次回顧起了「戊戌變法」時「康黨」們所主張的那些變革國家的措施──這是對延續了幾千年的帝制開始革命的前奏。
