本書在眾多現代美國俚語中精選了上千個，大多是日常生活中比較常用或新聞媒體中比較常見的俚語，吾人實在有必要加以瞭解，否則您可能會不知道在交談時，對方說 831、chill、da bomb、hit the hay、my ass、oxygen thief、rug rat、yummy mummy 等詞所表達的真正意思！另外，隨著電腦和行動科技快速發展，社群媒體正夯，新事物不斷湧現，大量的俚語也應運而生，數量之多，可謂「族繁不及備載」。雖然我們無法也不必瞭解所有這些用語，但總要知道 defriend、Facebook official、sext 等的意思吧！
本書所精選的俚語中還包括一些在憤怒、氣惱、不爽或其他強烈情緒來臨時所說的不雅詞。我們不必刻意去學習這些粗鄙、猥褻、甚至是髒話的俚語，但由於它們不時出現在日常生活、電影、影集、肥皂劇、甚至歌詞當中，我們也有必要知道它們的意思。事實上，這些不雅的俚語往往都有比較文雅的替換詞，這才是學習的重點，如用 freaking 替換 fucking、son of a gun 替換 son of a bitch、shut the front door 替換 shut the fuck up 等等，讓你同樣是在幹譙，但「罵人不帶髒字」。
