遠在東北亞的朝鮮王朝與臺灣的鄭氏政權雖無政治經濟上的官方互動，然而1667年，鄭經的貿易船隻漂至朝鮮，引發朝鮮王朝對鄭氏政權的關注。朝鮮官方對鄭氏政權的情報來自燕行使、漂流人和日本，相關情報在朝鮮內部引起轟動，特別是在三藩之亂期間和丁未漂流人事件，朝廷內部對鄭氏政權的威脅性展開了激烈的爭論，諸如：是否「築城設防」？金佑明等人鑑於當時災荒不斷，民生艱苦，持反對態度；但肅宗及多數朝臣為了確保邊防和海防安全，支持築城。又如：是否「渡海通鄭」？支持者以秉持尊周大義的激進派的尹鑴為代表；考量當時朝鮮現實局勢而反對的，則為保守派的許積、權大運與閔黯。
本書透過豐富的朝鮮文獻，深入探究朝鮮王朝對於鄭氏政權的認知與想像。我們從中得以窺見朝鮮王朝如何蒐集國際情報，及其對情報如何作出反應，並藉此呈現出朝鮮王朝中後期從「崇明」轉向「實學」的思想變化。
