《池袋西口公園》的短篇故事雖出自形形色色的真實街頭，卻罕有對特定人物和實事的直接描寫，〈水中之眼〉則打破了此一規律，以發生在昭和末期、1980年代尾聲的女高中生水泥埋屍事件為所本，側寫早逝的青春生命、未成年罪犯的扭曲心理以及背後家庭、社會不願正視的粉飾心態。
